Subject: Corolla - too upscale?
My family (of four, two teenage daughters +dog) have vacationed in Nags Head/Kitty Hawk a couple of times about 10 years ago. This year we are staying in Corolla -- just to be different and possibly not be as crowded. My husband is worried about it being TOO upscale, snobby and or "yuppyfied".

Will we be having to go up and down the coast to go to resturants/shopping? and if so, how long does it take to travel from Corolla to Nags Head?

Corolla has some great shopping - Timbuck II, water sports and atv rentals. It is upscale but not snobby. The curituck lighthouse is a must to visit. It takes a while to get down to nags head - probably 45 minutes in traffic. I think you will enjoy it. Visit the dunes north of corolla 4 wheel drive see the wild horses . I have seen them. Great shelling up there too. Hope this helps.

Corolla (pronounced Kralla) is not too upscale in my opinion. It is not Hilton Head Island. The houses tend to be newer and larger than many of the cottages down south. Corolla Light Village and Pine Island have very expensive rentals, but everything is basically just houses at the beach.

Ocean Sands is a nice area--we stayed there several times when we were renting. Staying at Ocean Sands you are only about 15 minutes north of Duck and its shopping and restaurants. (You will see fewer, if any, Confederate battle flags flying in Corolla and Duck than you would in KH, KDH or NH.)

I think you will really enjoy Ocean Sands. The beach is wonderful and shopping and restaurants are nearby.

I think it is just a preference. Actually, we wont stay anywhere south of Duck. I think it si much nicer, newer, cleaner up there. I beleive there is a movie theatre the teens may enjoy WHEN they get bored. Snobby? i dont think so. Everyone seems to keep to themselves but i dont think it is meant to be snobby.

Ocean Sands is the least "upscale" place in Corolla. No worries of it being ""yuppified" there.

Lol....Its worse when me n the boys go 4wheelin on the beach and back in the dunes/mud.

All the prissy people give us a hard time in the parking lots "Oh yer truck is making the streets dirty"

An observation that I have made (and heard from others.....):

Upon crossing the Wright Memorial Bridge on to the Outer Banks, you have two lanes of traffic. Vehicles in the left lane are heading towards Duck/Corolla/Southern Shores. The vehicles in the right lane are heading south to Kitty Hawk, etc...

I have observed that a great majority of license plates in the left lane are from Ohio, PA, NJ, NY, MA, DE, MD, and IL. The cars in the right lane are VA, NC, TN.....

I am not sure what that means, but it must mean something.....ha ha ha (probably directly related to the "confederate flag" explanation in this post)........

Corolla Village is a quaint and lovely section of Corolla. There aren't that many homes for rent but they are lovely. We stayed on Carotank Rd. in a house, "Fool's Paradise" and it was paradise. (Brindley Beach manages it.)

Corolla is wonderfull. The beaches are pristine, the people are friendly (although there were a great deal of young people from other countries working there for the summer)and there are lots of restaurants close by. There is a nice lottle shoppong center. It has the only grocery store. Go as early as possible, it turnns into a zoo. There is a movie theater and several restaurants ib the center. Have a great trip.

Well I have yet to say in Corolla, past 2 years me and my family stayed in Avon, Cape Hatteras, I love it down there, I like being away from the main "busy" part of OBX like KH, KDH, even though its nice I like Hatteras Island because it's just away from everything and you're a walk from the beach no matter what side you are on.

Also to add - Cape Hatteras also has a 3 room movie theater, 3 places to mini golf, food lion and a small strip mall with Food Lion, Try My Nuts, T-Shirt Shop (where u can get great deals on custom graphic ts, tanks and Hoodies!),and more, and a 20 minute drive away to the Ferry to Ocacroke. Not to mention the Point is very close drive when staying in Avon also

We used to stay in Nags Head area and moved to Corolla area for last 2 years. Love it. A lot of foreigners working in shops and rest. but so what. No problem with anyone. Area is very clean, upscale without too expensive. Still close to the main island Nags Head, Manteo. Things for kids to do also.

Corolla is nice, but it is far up. There is definitely more for teens to do in Kill Devil/Nags Head. If you're staying during peak season then expect a long drive down to the other towns on the single lane road thru Duck. We usually stay in Duck in the fall when the area is comfortable busy, but not crowded which means traffic is not a problem. And stay in South Nags Head in the peak season. It's a good half hour ride from Corolla to the tip of Kill Devil Hills, but during peak season it can be much longer. My suggestion is plan your vaca mostly up there and take one day to venture down south. That way you're not spending your entire time driving everywhere.

We are staying at a house in Pine Island. We're arriving sat. 4/4. I know it's preseason, but the price was right. It's still alot warmer down there, than upstate NY.
