We just returned from Kill Devil Hills. We had read the postings for BBQ places to eat while we were there. We went to Pigmans and it waz HORRIBLE. The sauce tasted purely of vinegar. Four of us had different meals and none of us finished our meals. The ribs were mostly fat, hardly any meat. If High Cotton's, which was also recommended , is anything like Pigmans, we will never eat there either.

Just by your comment on pigmans sauce I can tell that you don't know barbecue....and that's OK.

barbecue in this country differs from region to region. Eastern carolina Barbecue is distinctive in that the sauce is vinegar based (traditionally almost exlusively vinegar with some spices.) so when you make the comment that their sauce tasted like pure vinegar my reaction is that it's probably authentic eastern carolina BBQ.

there are places in texas that don't even sauce their BBQ it's all about the smoke and meat, maybe a little hot sauce.

it sounds like you were expecting a ketchup based sauce to go with your pork. memphis (if memory serves me) and st louis BBQ would suit your pallette more than eastern carolina BBQ.

Bubba's BBQ on hatteras island is nice and it's a bit of a compromise betweeen mainstream (ketchup based sauces) and carolina BBQ. the sauce is not sweet and definately tastes of vinegar but it's not overwhelming.

sorry you had a bad BBQ experience but I think some of it was due to not being an informed consumer.

High Cotton is good. Pigman's bbq is not bad, it sounds like you didn't like the sauce. NC people do like vinegar sauce, but they also have a red tomato based sauce, you must have missed it. Pigman's was sold two years ago and is not quite the same. Never had Pigman's ribs but High Cotton's are very good.

We are used to the ketchup based BBQs here in the North East. The vinegar base down south, is not what we are used to. But we have been to Jockeys Ribs in the past and there sauce was good, iguess they use a different base

I agree with the previous post. On past trips we have gone to Bubba's for barbecue which we have always liked. This past summer we vacationed in Corolla so we went to NC Barbeque. My husband and brother-in-law LOVED their barbeque and it was the vinegar based. I, on the other hand, didn't really like it and much preferred Bubba's. Interestingly enough, after our visit the food network had a show on barbeque sauce and companies that make it found in many surveys that men tend to prefer the vinegar types and women prefer the heavier more ketchup types. It was true for my family anyway. Living up north I just figured that barbecue sauce was barbecue sauce and was surprised at what was considered BBQ sauce at that place. To each his own.

I tried Bubba's BBQ twice in hopes the first time was just a bad experience, it was awful both times. The meat is dry, flavorless and bland. I hoped to improve it with sauce but their sause selection was even worse. You'd best forget bbq in the Avon area!

eastern carolina bbq= vinegar & hot peppers, no EASTERN NC bbq has a katchup base, I love the outer banks, but I was not a huge fan of the bbq, simply because I am from further south and the restraunts try to make the bbq closer to what the visiting population is used to consuming......post 2890 is right on

hi,
we first ate carolina bbq at "big al's" in manteo and i absolutely loved it. we then ate at pigman's and it was the most horrible bbq i have ever eaten. and to make it worse, i convinced my granddaughter to try it and told her she would LOVE it--well, your experience was our experience.
go to "big al's", you won't be sorry.

I agree with the previous responder--if we had first eaten BBQ at Pigman's, we would NEVER have tried it again. Since we were used to tomato based BBQ, we weren't sure what to expect of Carolina BBQ, but the BBQ at Big Al's is outstanding!!! To say Caroling BBQ is vinegar based is true, but to obliterate the taste of the meat with vinegar is another thing. Can anyone comment on Sooey's BBQ-we ran out of time-but we are going to try it on the next trip. Thanks to all of the residents of Nags Head and Manteo for making our trip FANTASTIC!!!

I read all the post on BBQ places and must say that I am not a huge fan of Vinegar based sauces. I have a recipe for Dry Rub ribs with out sauce. And a few recipes for sauce for different peoples tastes. I am from the Chicago area and I hope to open up a Place for my work in the Ocracoke or Hatteras areas. I would like feed back on where is the best place to have a bar and grill. I think most people would like my recipes that compliment ribs, like Beans, fries, slaw, mac and cheese, southern green beans, upside down cake in a skillet. You name it. I also am looking for a place to buy to live in in the Ocracoke area. Is it safe to stay meaning hurricanes and such. Thanks

Try Dune Burger across from Jennette's Pier in Nags Head next time. Their BBQ is great. Pigmans in not normal NC BBQ. It has a sauce that is not traditional to our regular BBQ. Sooey's is good BBQ also. High Cotton is good. Each of these places have the norm for what our BBQ is supposed to taste like.

my question to the last poster:
if you read the posts here about bbq spots, WHY would you have gone to pigman's?

Try Corolla Village BBQ, it's the best on the beach. It's located in Corolla behind Twiddy and Company Realtors.

Our family tried Sooey's in Corolla and I steered away from the pork, b/c I'm not familiar with the Eastern Carolina style, had the brisket which was excellent, and my husband had the ribs and pork which he loved. Our friend got the biggest fried fish sandwich ever which he said was great with the fries. Who knew the fish and chips would be so good. Of course the kids were happy with the chicken tenders and corn dogs. Great place for a big group. This place is definitely a secret gem.

It is my understanding that Pigman's Barbecue has new owners. I ate there recently and found the food to be delicious. The barbecue was excellent. I would definitely go back.

We are going to the Outer Banks in July and have been wondering about where to get barbecue. All the negative comments about Pigman's just make me what to try it even more. Thanks! I'll let you know how it goes..I love vinegar.

My family discovered Pigman's about 20 years ago by chance. It is now something of a family must whenever we are down on the OBX. As post 2890 mentioned different regions have different types of BBQ, I for one don't like sweet sticky sauces. I'm totally a Pigman's and an Eastern Carolina style BBQ fan!

There's a little place over the bridge, as if your going north on the right side of the road. Maybe Currituck, nc. just before a couple of golf courses. Not sure but they have a great little place, maybe 10 tables, great fried chicken & BBQ, plus great fix'ins. Checked plastic table cloths family run. Excellent. Does anyone know the name?

The place post 51525 mentioned is Saul's BBQ, very good. 252-491-5000

Also, if you're coming in from Virginia or Elizabeth City via Hwy 168/158, the Currituck BBQ Company in town of Coinjock is the place to stop. Best pulled brisket I've found, and a nice selection of sauces to sauce your own! currituckbbq.com
