Avon, NC

There are no hotels in Rodanthe or the larger settlement of Chicamacomico. There are, however, three inns or bed and breakfasts on the island of Hatteras where the village of Rodanthe is located. They are The Inn on Pamlico Sound, Cape Hatteras Bed and Breakfast, and the Seaside Inn. There are also numerous rental houses, both very large and small, as well as numerous campgrounds.

Campgrounds range from deluxe to rustic and include Camp Hatteras, Ocean Waves, Cape Hatteras KOA, and several small campgrounds catering to water sports enthusiasts. Water sports include fishing, kayaking (both ocean and sound-side), swimming, sailboarding and kiteboarding, among others.

Many of the restaurants, shops and markets located within the town of Rodanthe are seasonal with many closing during the winter months and reopening the following Spring. Many of these same businesses are family-owned and not chain franchises.

Great stay in Avon
Just wanted to say our family vacationed in Avon last week and had a wonderful time. I had checked the message board many times for info before our trip. I found all info both helpful and correct. We booked through Hatteras Realty and had great service. With kids we didn't venture far from the pool or beach. Shopped at Food Lion and smaller grocery retailers and found prices to be ok. Gas prices seemed to also be average. All in all we thought it was a beautiful place for a family vacation. Thanks for all the helpful info. We are already planning a trip next year. Read More...

Questions about Avon
I have been a long time visitor to the outer banks, and can hardly wait to go down again this 4th of july week :) I am staying in Avon this time, looking forward to checking out the southern beaches! I am also looking foward to finally getting my Italian Greyhounds down to the beach too!

I would greatly appreciate some suggestions on the following:
1- a great place for a sunset in the avon area?
2-convenient slip for a kayak, and rental place too!
3- Restaurants not to miss? My boyfriend is a professional chef, I would like to show him some of the best on the islands...willing to drive!
4-any reccomended activities that i can involve the dogs in? restaurants, or whatever. I look forward to your responses! Thanks in advance! Read More...

Rodanthe
I've been coming to OBX for 4 years now and love it every time. This year we are staying in Rodanthe and looking for any comments or suggestions about the area. How far are the food stores, liquor stores, ect. Also wondering how the temps are mid to late May?? Never had a bad trip yet and looking forward to this year as well. Read More...

Hatteras or Duck/Corolla?
Planning a vacation to OBX and am trying to decide between Hatteras, Avon area or Duck/Corolla, with oceanfront rental in either location. From what I understand Duck/Corolla is newer and more residential and rentals seem to be more costly. Hatteras area appears to be less populated, and rentals less costly. I'm trying to determine the benefits or drawbacks to each area. A couple of specific questions I have are:

How long is drive to each area once you get over bridge? Are there enough 'large' grocery stores; video rentals and restuarants in each area? Is the beach area different in either area or access to beach from the homes (in things read on Hatteras rental descriptions don't mention 'private boardwalk to beach')? Any and all information would be appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Read More...
