The area you want to avoid are Southern Shores where the old farts and retirees have their head firmly up their a**. Dogs are not allowed at all. Next with their heads up their a** is KDH where dogs are allowed before 9am or after 6pm.

Nags Head and Kitty Hawk allow dogs so stay there.

Just keep 'em leashed. Not everyone's a dog lover and nothing's worse than having a big wet dog jump up on you when you're relaxing on your beach chair!

Keep them leashed and clean up after them... I don't want to step in their business in my bare feet. Don'
t just cover it with sand for my feet to find.
On Hatteras Island keep them leased or suffer large fines.

According to the Cape Hatteras National Park info, ALL dogs must be on a 6' leash and not running free. Also, pick up after your dog, so bring plenty of bags. We are bringing ours for the 1st time...and depending on how it goes, we'll see if we bring him back!

We are bringing our Dog this year, and have brought her in the past. Bring leashes and leads, poop bags and be prepared for burrs on the feet in certain places. They are part of your family and I am sure they will have a great time with you!

I walked to the beach yesterday and passed a huge PILE walking by boardwalk on a sodded oceanfront lawn. Disgusting to say the least and what a craphead of an owner to leave the mess for everyone else to view. Clean up after your dog!

Hi 467, I am 462. We are excited to bring him, and thanks for the advice on the burrs. I was thinking about them and the cactus that grow off the pathways. We plan on being very careful about him out in the hot sun and on the hot asphalt as well.

My big thing is he will be in his crate on the 9 hour trip...rather than bouncing around in the car. Also, it will be great to have at the house.

We will bring more bags than we need as we are very, very vigilant on that issue! We have never left anything for anyone to step on...I would be so upset if my own kids walked in it. Plus, it is common courtesy when you have a pet!

I have three dogs, two outside and one inside. We never bring them to OBX. Too much of a drive(7 hours), and they are a hassle on the beach for others.
467 - My dogs are my "pets". I love them, but my "family" is my wife and kids. Lets not go overboard.

You don't love them or you would refer to them as part of your family

My dog is part of my family. But to each his own...

I did buy a pair of mutluks (dog shoes) on ebay for about $15 to bring incase the burrs are bad. Last year we didn't bring our dog, but my brother brought both of his and we didn't have any burrs, but our Chessie is a big wimp when it comes to her feet.

Have fun...We will be there in October! :)

We brought our Lab to Duck a month ago. He had a blast! It was a lot of work for the wife & I b/c we had to have our eyes on him at all times...so that he was not in anybody else's business (food, kids, etc).

Just remember that not everyone is a dog lover. Be prepared supervise them as if they were a 5 year old child so that you respect other's vacations.

Oh....next year Fido stay's at the Boarding Kennel!

you know what? this is unrealistic but Labs are such awesome dogs, I wish they would ban all dogs EXCEPT labs.
They are the best I'm sorry and don't bother anyone.
So long as the owners cleaned up the mess I would be more than happy to have a lab approach my kids or me. It's the yappy, bad tempered dogs that are irritating.
Just venting, don't take it personally if you have a little dog. LOL

Those are some lucky pets whose owners go to the extra trouble ( and expense) to bring them along on their vacation.
It's a shame there aren't more people like you.
Enjoy your vacations with your WHOLE family.

I saw one dog owner kick his dog's mess right into the ocean in front of our group's chairs. Would you want to go into the ocean then and there. It's nice that many people have dogs, but really is it a necessity to have them on the beach. Love them at home, but leave them there. I think the dog appreciates his vacation from his "family" once in a while also.
