You can go to the 4WD area north of Corolla to look for them if you have a 4x4--not AWD. Or you can take a tour. Or you can see them in the pony pens on your way from the ferry to the village on Ocracoke.

And on rare occasions, if you stay in Corolla, you might see them walking along the way if they've escaped from the Carova area.

Actually, the ones on Ocracoke are NOT wild horses. Those are domesticated. The only wild horses are north of Corolla.

The horses on Ocracoke were wild until 1957 when the road was built. After that they built pens to protect them.

Yes, I heard that. They since became domesticated.

Last year we used Barrier Isle. They have an office in Timbuktu in Corolla. Tour guides name was Bob, great guy. He is a local and knew a lot of information. There were 6 of us in a larg SUV and it was comfy.Enjoy.

we used Wild Horse Adventure Tours this year...6 of us in an air-conditioned suburban. Our tour guide was wonderful...can't remember his name though.

Check for coupons in sunny day guide/sunnydayguide.com
Try to book online as well...we did that and got a better deal.

My family of four rented a jeep from Corolla Jeep Rentals. We absolutely loved it we had an amazing time. We found the horses rather quickly on our own. It is well worth the money if you don't have a 4WD. You can stop and go at your own pace rather than be in a big van with a bunch of other people. Also yes check for coupons they all have them!
