Subject: Kill Devil Hills?
Hi

Me, hubbie and 3 year old are coming to OBX for our first vacation and we wanted some of your impressions of Kill Devil Hills. We are not "partiers" but we do want some fun/friendly family things to do. We want to be close to some restaurant choices as well. Ideas? Suggestions? Would Kill Devil Hills be a good spot for us?
Thanks

Yes. My husband and I stayed there last year. We're not partiers, either. There were good restaurants close to our condo. We were also close to Jockey's Ridge and the Wright Brothers Memorial. Also, I liked that KDH was kind of in the center of everything we wanted to see. It wasn't terribly far from Corolla or Hatteras.

Yes, KDH. Food: Chili Peppers, Black Pelican, Coastal Cactus, and more all in the same area, within a few miles of each other. Jockeys Ridge is cool, beach, lots of putt-putt places, shopping, decent hotels and nice houses, not far from everything.

i'm from kdh, its a great place to have as a home base for vacation. everyone typically drives north to duck/corolla or down south to the lighthouses, the town is pretty much in the center of everying. most of the towns is family friendly. check out the outerbanks brewing station, great food, good house beers. for a quick lunch check out The Pit boardriders grill, really good wraps, and huge, and fairly cheap. for breakfast henery's up at the town line is great, also mama kwans is really good, honestly there are enough good places to eat, you will be unable to visit all of the good places. all the places i mentioned are on the bypass, so it will be easy to find. the town has plenty of lifeguards to watch over you while visiting the beach
any idea where in town you will be staying

In general, the Outerbanks is not a big "party" atmosphere like a Myrtle Beach, etc. It is mostly a family atmosphere. The beaches along the banks are also generally not very crowded and become less so the farther south you go. You did not specify the ages of your kids but here are a few ideas. Visit the Oregon Inlet fishing center one afternoon around 4pm when the fisherman display their catches. Jockey's Ridge state park dunes are a favorite of children and adults of all ages. Avoid going in the heat of the day. Just after dinner is good. Take a kite as the breezes at the top are idealfor flying and be sure to stay for the sunset. Hit the beach after dark with a bucket, flashlight and net and let the kids chase ghost crabs. Also a favorite pastime! The free ferry over to Ocracoke Island is a nice day trip. Be sure to check out the Bodie Island Lighthouse and visit Roanoake Island to take in a production of the Lost Colony. The NC Aquarium is also good rainy day fun.

We are going down to KDH at the end of may and we are staying at a placed called Colony IV by the sea. www.motelbythesea.com. The rates are really good and they are oceanfront with two pools (I have a small child so this was perfect for me!) Hope you have fun..the outer banks are a great place for family fun, not "partiers".

We've stayed in Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, and Kitty Hawk several times, and it's hard to pick a favorite. Getting around isn't a problem (except maybe in mid-summer), so it's never a bad drive anywhere. Our favorite places to eat: Pier House Restaurant (Nags Head Pier), The Dunes, Miller's (both locations), Bob's Grill, Dare Devil's Pizza, and Kill Devil's Custard. As you can see, we don't go for the fancier/most expensive places. If you like shopping, don't miss the Farmer's Daughter, the Cotton Gin, and Sea Tree Gallery--all in Nags Head. Drive down to the Bodie Lighthouse and spend time at Coquina Beach which is right across the highway. And if you have time, spend a couple of days or so on Ocracoke. You'll love the Outer Banks!

Try Dirty Dicks for take out shrimp!!! Yummy!! Not a big party area, we take lots of little kids. Last year 11 of them 7 (was the oldest) and 3 (was the youngest)!! They enjoy the aquarium and crabbing!! Go to the beach at night with a flashlight and let them chase the crabs. Our kids love that. Kill Devil Custard isalways a hit!! Have a blast. This will be our 6th straight year. From PA!!!
