Subject: kill devil hills / kitty hawk vs nags head
Can anyone describe these three areas for me, i.e. types of rentals (LG or SM), restaurants, things to do, beaches...

Trying to pin point our destination this year...

Yes, they have beaches, resturants and things to do. What is a LG or SM rental?

"Yes, they have beaches, resturants and things to do."
Thanks. Great Help?!?

Are the beaches wider in some areas compared to others?

Do the homes tend to be more upscale (like Corolla) in NH, KDH or KH?

Kill Devil and Kitty Hawk seems to be more like actual cottage homes, not all. Nags Head seems to be a little more upscale. None of these areas is like Duck or Corolla. We've stayed in all the areas and the beaches are nice everywhere. We found the Northern beach area (Corolla, etc) a little less crowded on the beach. All have nice restaurants. Only 1/2 hr. drive from Corolla to 158 for eating and shopping.

You may want to look at homes in the Currituck Club. Very convient to grocery store and shopping. Golf Course, Health Club, 6 pools, and a trolley that will drop you off at the beach. The homes here are as nice or one step down from Pine Island. It is one of the best kept secrets.

The beaches in KDH, KH and NH are relatively small. The beaches in Duck/Corolla are prettier, but it is very, very congested up there. There is only one way in and out. Nags Head has some very "upscale" houses and closer to fishing boats, etc. You really can't go wrong in any of these towns. I hope that helps :)

honestly the width of the beach is really not too big of a deal. if you are in a rental, there is not a huge population, unless you happen to be near a public access. the only areas i would avoid if the width of the beach is really a concern would be south nags head, the asheville, woodmere, prospect area of kill devil hills, and southern kitty hawk its sorta narrow in places too. its really difficult to say what beach will be wide next summer. the landscape of the beach changes with seasons, storms ect. as far as a decision between staying in kitty hawk/kdh/nags head, its all the same basically. all are very close to each other. your best bet is to find a rental for your needs and go from there. as far as corolla/duck, its far more expensive than other places, along with the mini plug about the currituck club. there are plenty of grocery stores

For me there is no difference. Kitty Hawk and KDH are very much alike. I have heard that some area's in Nags Head have bad beach erosion due to storms. The area's you are asking about is know as "French Fry Alley" due to all the resturants. You will find tons of shopping center, miniture golf courses, all along RT 158. I think the most helpful info I could suggest is to find a rental company and start searching for a beach house. That will narrow it down even more for you. HTH

I suggest you look at the rental company websites to see what type of housing and prices are available from Corolla down to Nags Head.
Once you find a couple places you like, ask again with specifics to compare the areas and perhaps we can be of more help to you.

I stayed in Kill Devil Hills last year. The beach was not tremendously wide, but plenty wide enough to lay in the sun, play in the sand, etc. It was a good location, right in the center of everything we wanted to see--about an hour either way to Hatteras or to Corolla. There were plenty of restaurants close by. Food Lion was convenient for shopping for groceries. The area we stayed in was condos and houses; no motels really close by. The beach was not crowded, but that may have been because of the less than ideal beach weather.

let me say a bit about what 9682 said, the beaches change every season, and in different areas. kdh has 5 miles of beach, some areas at the beginning of the summer had fairly narrow beaches. by the end of the summer its completely different, some of the areas that previously had very wide beaches had narrow beaches(for the outer banks, which i think is probably relativly narrow compared to other beaches)

From what we've seen the last few times we've stayed there, KDH & KH are more downscale...smaller cottages, closer together, while NH is a little more spread out, larger cottages. If you want upscale, go north to Duck, Corolla area. Anyplace can be enjoyable.. it's only for a week. Spend some time looking around, and next year you'll be more aware.

Size of beach is important only relative to the population density. South Nags Head beaches may be narrow, but there are fewer people using them. I dispute that northern beaches are "prettier". That's a very subjective statement. All the OBX are attractive, thanks mostly to North Carolina dune protection policies.

We own an "upscale" cottage in KH, 100 yards from beach, great views. We're closer to more restaurants than cottages in NH....see it at joelambjr.com, #115

We stayed in Nags Head , Adagio, through Resort Realty and were very pleased. It is a larger house, 8 bedrooms, large rooms, very well maintained and close to the beach with it's own private walkway... not far at all to private beach. Homes around it also well maintained... 2223 Virginia Dare Drive

We have stayed in Nags Head, Southern Shores and Corolla. We are going back to Nags Head this year. And were getting married there. You should start looking at realtor websites and first choose the house that is right for the amount of people going and your budget. We always get a 6 bedroom house because of the large group of people. I love all of the OBX though so you'll be happy wherever you end up. Enjoy.
