There is wireless internet available for pay thru skyenetwireless.com in all of Duck. The antenna is on the Duck water tower, and the signal reaches quite a long way. Don't have to be in a cafe to acquire the signal!

we were visiting last sep and found a tropical smoothie that had it most of the time but had server problems during a couple tries. we also hitched off a hotel which of course is a hassle. other than sunshine days equaled no signal. please verify the obxfreewifi as this will once again be an issue. also look on ncbeaches.com "internet hot spots". once we arrived it was hard to find coverage and we were geographically challenged-duh on our part so any assistance is appreciated.

I've used the Skyenet Wireless service - the radios show up as "OBXWAN". It's $40 a week but it works great. Correction - they are FANTASTIC. Customer service picks up the fone, they know what they are talking about and solved an issue with my laptop that was bugging me for months.

I've used the SkyeNet service - they cover OBX from Nags Head to Corolla and I must say - they are FANTASTIC!!! No, it's not free ($45 for a week), but it works great, very very very fast and totally reliable. A live person answered the phone at 2am, got my laptop fixed and online in 10 minutes. I was also able to use their service everywhere I went in OBX - I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! Their phone number is 866-759-3638.

The best spot is the new wine shop across from Duck United Methodist. Free wireless internet, and a strong signal.

LOL. For $45/week they damned well better be fanstastic. That's more than 1 month worth of service on a regular provider. For a week. That's raking in some serious cash and one would hope that would be invested in some high-end techs =)

That price ($45) is for weekly service for folks who are here for only a week. I use their service full time in my home and they only charge me $30 a month with an annual contract. It works as advertised, they support our renters (unlike the nightmare of having to get Charter to support them), and most importantly these guys know what they are talking about - very professional. I don't begrudge them the high weekly charge for someone who only needs the service for a week and neither should you. They have managed to cover the entire Outer Banks with good service and my renters love them. Not a single complain in 4 years. They have grown that entire time while the "free" service (skyenet's competition) first went out of business, then came back as a pay service and then went out of business again. I think credit is due where its deserved and these guys deserve it. I've met the owners - two guys from New York - and they really work their hearts out and it definitely shows. Obviously, I would highly recommend...you cannot go wrong with SkyeNet.
