Subject: Ocracoke, NC.....is it worth the trip?
We will be in staying in Corolla. Is it worth the trip to Ocracoke? We have three boys, ages, 15, 12, & 7.

that's going to be a LONG trip for you. I personally LOVE ocracoke, but in truth, it's not the most kid friendly areaa on the outer banks. Aside from the beach there is not a lot a kid is going to want to do. there are great shops good food and great history over there, but kids don't typically care about those things. as much as in pains me to say this (since it is one of my favorite places, bar none) it may not be worth the long trip down there. if you were staying on hatteras island, I'd say go anyway, because the ferry ride and feeding the seagulls is worth it alone even if you just turn right back around, but when you are talking about probably a 1:30 - 2 hour drive or so down there it may not be what you want to do especially with the kids. :-(

however, if they are outdoorsman types and like to fish, the fishing and crabbing is GREAT over there.

A very long haul from Corolla--probably two hours to the ferry in Hatteras Village, 40 minutes on the ferry, and 15 minutes driving into town. Then you turn around and repeat the trip. Stuff to see on the trip includes the Bodie Island Lighthouse, Chicamacomico Life Saving Stations, the Native American museum in Frisco, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in Buxton, and Ocracoke Lighthouse on the island. Each stop adds more time to the trip. There is a Blackbeard store/museum in Ocracoke, but I think your kids would have driven you crazy by the time you get there. If you need a side trip, consider just going to Buxton, but not on a weekend.

Personally I drove from Nags head to the ferry and then to Ocracoke. it took me a good 2 hrs, but we loved it. We went shell picking on the beach and we loved it. Also had lunch at Harbors pub and it was wonderful. Bodie Island lighhouse is nice, but they don't allow anyone up. Also check if its low-tide and this way you will have btter luck in finding nice sea shells.

The trip is long, yes, but it's worth making if you stop along the way and visit the many sights. The kids will probably enjoy the ponies, the Blackbeard stuff and, of course, the kite shop in Ocracoke village. Personally, I think it's longer than a 2 hr trip. With the ferry ride, it's more like 3. But like the other poster, I love OINC and go there to write so, to me, it's worth the trip (and I drive 16 hrs to get there!)

We always start our vacation with a few days at Ocracoke and then over to Hatteras village for the week. Ocracoke is lively! I love to eat along the water at Smack Nalley's or Jolly Rodger. There's always music. Deepwater Theatre is a must. Kayaking is fun. The beaches are great.
